Types of School - NEPAL
Nepal has two types of schools: Public schools which are completely
financed by His Majesty’s government and the Private Schools operating on
independent. There is a demand for TESOL trained teachers in both types of
schools. It is more so, because with English becoming the global language,
the stress on communicative English has increased manifold and it is not
restricted to learning grammar and literature alone.
There are nearly 8,500 private schools in Nepal. Quite a few schools are
Christian Missionary schools or are of Christian belief. Most private
schools are co-educational schools. Some offer ESL courses for its
students. The vast majority of expatriate students come from families who
are involved with international development organizations and agencies.
Children with parents attached to diplomatic missions represent another
significant group.
Education in Nepal is structured as school education and higher education.
School education includes primary level of grades 1-5, lower secondary and
secondary levels of grades 6-8 and 9-10 respectively. Pre-primary level of
education is also available in certain areas. Six years of age is the
prescribed age for admission into grade one. Primary education is offered
in six types of schools: (1) the Buddhist schools, designed primarily for
training religious leaders; (2) the formal English schools, which are
oriented to the study of Great Britain and India; (3) the Sanskrit
schools, whose major emphasis is language; (4) the basic schools, which
provide self-sufficiency through craftwork; (5) the vernacular schools;
(6) and the national schools, which are similar to the basic schools.
A national level School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Examination is conducted
at the end of grade ten. Grades 11 and 12 are considered as higher
secondary level. Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) supervises higher
secondary schools which are mostly under private management.
